Detailed Analysis
Billy Idol's 'White Wedding' contains several mature themes that warrant parental guidance. The song's background context is notable: it was written about Idol's sister getting pregnant and married quickly ('shotgun' wedding), which adds a layer of mature thematic content. The repeated use of 'shotgun' is a direct reference to a forced or rushed marriage due to pregnancy. Lines such as 'who have you sold yourself to?' and 'who have you sold your soul to?' carry strong suggestive undertones about sexual availability or promiscuity. The phrase 'what's your vice or wish?' implies morally questionable behavior. The 'silk shedding' reference in the outro carries sexual undertones. The song also conveys a nihilistic worldview ('there is nothing fair/safe/sure/pure in this world'), which, while not graphic, presents a cynical and disillusioned perspective unsuitable for younger children. There is no explicit profanity or graphic sexual language, but the thematic content surrounding premarital sex, shotgun pregnancies, and suggestive questioning about a young woman's sexual choices pushes this into teen-and-older territory. The overall tone is edgy and provocative by design.
